Although the present church is now seventy two years old, the parish had been thriving for many years before the original church was destroyed by fire on the evening of October the 22nd, 1936. Records do not show when the original church was built. The new church was officially opened on August 15, 1937, by Archbishop Thomas O’Shea. It cost then £2,816. The stained glass windows were donated by resident families. The church is named after St. Columba who was born in Ireland in 521 A.D., was ordained a priest at 24 and possibly founded up to 300 monasteries over the next 15 years.
