Hi and welcome to the first article for the Ashhurst Pohangina Rugby Football Club for 2014.

A Night at the Races

On Saturday March 15 2014 the club will be holding a fundraising evening.  This will feature horse races being shown and lucky punters being able to back the horse of their choice.  Betting will be in $2 units and entry will be by gold coin donation.

The feature race of the night will have a field of 20 horses and we hope to have a sponsor for each horse.  The winning horse will give that sponsor naming rights on the Senior Reserve team jerseys for the 2014 season.  The cost to sponsor a horse is $100 (plus GST).  If you are interested in sponsoring a horse please contact Pete Fowell Ph 021 616 436 or email peterf@bennettcurrie.co.nz or Brad Childs Ph 022 136 9954 for further details.

This great evening commences at 7.00pm and we look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible.  Full bar facilities will be available during the night including Eftpos.

Junior Rugby

Ashhurst Pohangina Rugby Football Club offers rugby for boys and girls aged from four to twelve year olds.

Regardless of your experience or what school you attend we have a team for you.

Junior rugby is really fun and simple to learn, it helps you with your ball handling, possession and co-ordination skills which contribute greatly to your overall rugby skills. Not to mention the new friends you will make!

There are different grades of rugby dependant on age and weight. If you are graded in Under 6 or Under 7 you will be playing non-tackle rugby, those in higher grades will play full contact rugby.

Rippa Rugby (Non-Tackle)

Players who are below the age of 7 on 1st January of the playing year, will be allocated to non-tackle grades where they will play "Rippa Rugby". The games are 7 aside and each team usually contains 8-9 players. We do our best to keep players within their school groupings. The games are 20 minutes per half.

The emphasis is on developing basic skills and participating. Skills such as running with the ball, passing in either direction, running straight, catching the ball are the focus at these ages. Tackling is limited to ripping a flag from the ball carriers belt.  Once "ripped" the tackled player must pass the ball to a team mate. There are player of the day awards that are shared around the team through the season.

School Rugby (Tackle Grade) 7-12 Year Olds

Players who are 7 or above on 1st January of the playing year, are placed in teams that play tackle grade. By the time the players hit this grade they seem to be more than ready for tackle rugby. The players are also allocated into positions in these grades. Full training is provided to the boys and girls on how to tackle and get tackled. Each coach must sit an associate referee's course and first aid course for these grades.
